How to choose a packaging material
The right material depends on three questions: how the package travels, how it is displayed, and what impression it should leave. A box that ships through the mail needs different board than a carton that sits on a store shelf. A gift box that customers keep is built differently again.
Materials at a glance
- SBS paperboard: bleached white board with a smooth surface for sharp, bright printing. The standard for retail folding cartons.
- Kraft: unbleached brown paper and board with a natural look, used for cartons, mailers and bags.
- Corrugated: fluted board between flat liners. Light and strong, and the usual choice for mailer and shipping boxes.
- Rigid chipboard: thick, dense board wrapped in printed paper for premium, set-up boxes.
- Clear PET: a transparent plastic sheet for see-through boxes and windows.
- Tin: printed metal containers that customers keep and reuse.
- Holographic and foil: metallic and light-shifting finishes applied to many of the materials above.
- Eco-friendly builds: paper-based materials, recycled content where available and lighter coatings.
Matching material to use
Shipping and e-commerce
Corrugated board, often E-flute for mailers, protects products in transit and can be printed inside and out.
Retail shelves
SBS or kraft paperboard folding cartons give crisp print and fold flat for storage.
Premium and gifting
Rigid chipboard boxes and tins feel substantial and are often kept by the customer.
Show the product
Clear PET boxes or paperboard boxes with a PET window let customers see what they are buying.
Finishes work across materials
Lamination, spot UV, foil stamping, embossing and debossing can be added to most paper-based materials. Some finishes, such as plastic laminates and metallic films, can affect recyclability, so weigh look against end-of-life goals.
