Custom Handle Boxes

Updated

Custom handle boxes are printed boxes with a built-in carry handle, either die cut from the same board or added as a rope, ribbon or plastic grip. They suit bakeries, takeout, gift sets, wine and spirits, toys and retail purchases that customers carry home. Vorex makes handle boxes to your exact size for businesses in the USA and Canada.

Custom Handle Boxes

What is a handle box?

A handle box combines a box and a carrier. The simplest version has a handle cut into extended top panels that meet above the box, as in a gable box. Others have a die-cut slot in the lid, or an added handle made of rope, ribbon or plastic. The box closes and carries in one step, with no bag needed.

When to choose a handle box

Handle boxes suit anything a customer takes away by hand: cakes and pastries, takeout meals, wine and spirits gift sets, toys, small appliances, party supplies and event kits. They also make a good retail display, since the handle gives the box a distinct silhouette. For heavy products, the handle style and board need to be chosen with weight in mind.

Materials and finishes

Light carry boxes are usually SBS paperboard, a bleached board with a smooth print surface, or kraft board, which is unbleached and brown. For heavier contents, corrugated board such as E-flute adds strength, and a reinforced handle or added rope grip spreads the load. Matte or gloss lamination helps the box resist scuffs and moisture from hands.

Design tips

  • Tell us the weight: it decides the board and handle type.
  • Brand the top: the handle area is seen when the box is carried.
  • Keep text off the handle cut: leave a clear area around it.
  • For food: mention it so we can suggest suitable board and coatings.

FAQ

Custom Handle Boxes: common questions

How much weight can a handle box carry?
It depends on the board, the box size and the handle type, so we do not quote a single figure. Paperboard with a die-cut handle suits light items, while corrugated board with a reinforced or added handle suits heavier ones. Tell us your product weight and we will recommend a build.
What is the difference between a handle box and a gable box?
A gable box is one type of handle box. Its top panels rise to a peak, like a house roof, and the handle is cut through them. Other handle boxes have a slot in a flat lid or an added rope or ribbon handle. The right choice depends on your product and look.
Are handle boxes good for cakes and bakery items?
Yes. Handle boxes are widely used for cakes, pastries and cookies because they are easy to carry and keep items upright. Bakery boxes often use food-grade paperboard and may include a window. Mention that the box is for food when you request a quote.
Can I add a rope or ribbon handle?
Yes. Rope, cotton cord and ribbon handles are common on premium gift and retail boxes, especially rigid boxes. They are added after the box is made. A die-cut handle in the board itself keeps the box all paper, which can be simpler to recycle.
How do I order custom handle boxes?
Send us the product size and weight, quantity, material, handle style and artwork through our quote form. We reply with pricing and options, set your artwork on the dieline and send a digital proof before print. Production starts once you approve the proof.
