Custom Window Boxes

Updated

Custom window boxes are printed paperboard or corrugated boxes with a die-cut opening, usually covered by a thin clear film, that lets shoppers see the product without opening the pack. They suit bakeries, candles, soap, toys, cosmetics and gift brands that sell on looks. Vorex makes them to your exact size for brands across the USA and Canada.

Custom Window Boxes

What is a window box?

A window box is a folding carton or mailer with an opening cut into one or more panels. The opening is usually backed with a clear film glued to the inside, which keeps dust out while the product stays visible. The window can be a simple rectangle or a shape that echoes your logo or product.

When to choose a window box

Choose a window when the product sells itself on sight: baked goods, handmade soap, candles, toys, socks or cosmetics. A window also helps buyers check color or flavor without opening the box, which can reduce handling on store shelves.

  • Retail shelves: shoppers see the real product next to your branding.
  • Gift packs: the contents become part of the presentation.
  • Food: customers see freshness before they buy.

Materials and finishes

Most window boxes are made from SBS paperboard, a bleached board with a smooth white surface that prints sharp color, or from kraft board for a natural look. For heavier items, a window can be cut into E-flute corrugated. Finishes such as matte or gloss lamination, spot UV and foil stamping work around the window.

Design tips

  • Keep important text and barcodes away from the window and the folds.
  • Position the window where the most attractive part of the product sits.
  • Leave enough board around the opening so the panel stays strong.
  • Think about the inside print, since part of it will show through.
  • For food, ask about films suited to direct food contact.

FAQ

Custom Window Boxes: common questions

What is the window on a window box made of?
Most windows are covered with a thin clear plastic film, often PET, glued to the inside of the panel. Some brands leave the opening uncovered to avoid plastic altogether. We can quote both options so you can weigh product protection against the look and recycling needs of your brand.
Can the window be any shape?
Yes. The window is cut with a die, so it can be a rectangle, circle, oval, heart or a custom outline that matches your logo or product. Very fine shapes and sharp inside corners can weaken the panel, so our team checks the dieline and suggests changes before you approve the digital proof.
Are window boxes good for food like cookies and cupcakes?
Window boxes are widely used for bakery items because customers can see freshness. If food touches the board or film directly, tell us when you request a quote so we can recommend suitable food-safe materials, or plan for a liner or tray inside. Always check the labeling rules that apply to your product.
Are window boxes recyclable?
The paperboard part is widely recyclable. The plastic film is a different material, so some recycling programs ask that it be removed first. Rules vary by city and province, so check your local guidance. If recyclability is a priority, ask us about an uncovered window or a paper-only design.
How do I get a price for custom window boxes?
Send your box dimensions, quantity, material, window size and artwork through our quote form. We reply with pricing and options, help prepare your artwork on the dieline and send a digital proof before print. Production starts only after you approve the proof.
