What SBS paperboard is

SBS stands for solid bleached sulfate. It is made from bleached pulp, so it is white all the way through, and it is usually coated on the print side for a smooth surface. That surface holds fine detail, small text and full-color images well. SBS is a single solid sheet, not fluted like corrugated, and it folds cleanly along scored lines.

When to choose SBS

Choose SBS for retail packaging that sits on a shelf or in a display: cosmetics, skin care, supplements, candles, tea, small electronics and food cartons. It is the usual board for tuck end, auto-lock bottom, sleeve, window and display boxes. For heavy items or boxes that ship on their own, a corrugated board is usually the better choice.

Board thickness

Paperboard thickness is often described in points, where a higher number means thicker board. Lighter boards suit small, light products; heavier boards feel more solid and resist crushing better. Tell us what the product weighs and we suggest a suitable thickness.

Printing and finishes

Because the base is white and smooth, SBS takes CMYK and spot colors with good color accuracy. Common finishes include:

• Matte, gloss or soft-touch lamination for feel and scuff protection.
• Spot UV to make a logo or pattern shine against a matte background.
• Foil stamping in gold, silver or colors.
• Embossing and debossing for raised or pressed details.
• Window cutouts with a clear film so the product shows.

Design tips

• Keep text and key art inside the safe area, away from folds and cut lines.
• Design all panels, including the bottom and inside flaps if they show.
• Leave room for barcodes and any required label information.
