Custom Shape Boxes

Updated

Custom shape boxes are boxes built around an outline other than a standard rectangle, such as a heart, octagon, house, star or your logo outline. They suit gifts, confectionery, cosmetics, toys, event favors and limited editions. Vorex helps design and quote custom shapes made to your exact size for brands in the USA and Canada.

Custom Shape Boxes

What is a custom shape box?

A custom shape box is any box whose footprint or profile is not a plain rectangle. Some shapes are folding cartons cut from a single sheet, such as triangles, gable houses and octagons. Others are rigid boxes, where thick chipboard is formed into curves like hearts and circles and wrapped in paper. The shape starts as a dieline drawn around your product and your idea.

When to choose a custom shape

Choose a custom shape when the package itself should be memorable: a heart box for Valentine's chocolates, a house-shaped box for a real estate gift, a star for the holidays, or an outline that mirrors your logo. Shapes work well for gifts, limited editions, launch kits and favors, where the box is part of the product. For everyday shipping, a standard box inside a printed shape is often more practical.

Materials and finishes

  • SBS paperboard: smooth bleached board for folded shapes with bright print.
  • Kraft: unbleached board for a natural, handmade look.
  • Rigid chipboard: thick board for curved and premium shapes with a lid.
  • E-flute corrugated: thin fluted board when a shape needs to ship.

Foil, embossing, spot UV and holographic boards can make a shape stand out further.

Design tips

  • Start with the product: the shape must still hold it securely.
  • Keep curves gentle: very tight curves are hard to form cleanly.
  • Expect a sample stage: new shapes benefit from a proof you can check carefully.
  • Plan how it ships: unusual shapes may need an outer box.

FAQ

Custom Shape Boxes: common questions

Can you make a box in any shape?
Most shapes are possible, within the limits of how board folds and bends. Folding cartons handle straight-sided shapes well, while rigid boxes can form curves like hearts and circles. Share a sketch or reference image with your product size, and our team will tell you what is practical.
Are custom shape boxes more expensive than standard boxes?
Custom shapes usually need a new cutting die and may involve more hand work, so they often cost more than a standard style of the same size. The difference depends on the shape, material and quantity. Request a quote and we reply with pricing for your design.
What are popular custom box shapes?
Popular shapes include hearts, octagons, hexagons, triangles, houses, stars, circles and pillow shapes, plus outlines based on a brand's logo or product, such as a bottle or a garment. Seasonal shapes are common for holidays, and event shapes for weddings and corporate gifts.
Do I need a designer to create a custom shape box?
No. Tell us your product size and the shape you have in mind, even as a rough sketch, and our team helps turn it into a dieline. You then place your artwork, or we help set it up, and you receive a digital proof before print.
How do I order custom shape boxes?
