What is a tube box?

A tube box, also called a paper tube or cylinder box, is made by winding layers of paperboard into a rigid round core, then covering it with a printed paper wrap. Most have a lift-off lid that slides over the body, and a base that is either a fixed paper disc or a second cap. Some use a shoulder or neck, where an inner tube rises above the body so the lid closes flush.

When to choose a tube

Tubes suit products that are round or rolled: loose-leaf tea, ground coffee, candles, lip balm, cosmetics, fragrance, rolled socks or T-shirts, bottles in gift packs, and posters or prints. The round shape feels considered and premium, and the sturdy wall protects contents. Many customers keep tubes for storage, so your brand stays in their home.

Materials and finishes

The body is wound paperboard, and the outer wrap can be coated white paper for full-color print, kraft paper for a natural look, or textured and metallic papers. Foil stamping, embossing, spot UV and matte or soft-touch lamination can be applied to the wrap. For food, ask about inner linings suited to your product.

Design tips

• Design a wrap, not panels: artwork runs around the tube in one continuous band, so avoid seams across key text.
• Use the lid: the top is visible on shelves and in gift boxes.
• Measure inside diameter: include any label, cap or bottle shoulder.
• Consider closure feel: a snug lid adds to the opening experience.
