Types of custom bags

Bags fall into two broad groups. Flexible pouches are made from layered films and hold the product itself: coffee, snacks, powders, gummies, bath salts and dried herbs. Paper bags carry products out of a store or into a delivery, and act as a walking advertisement for the brand.

Flexible pouches

• Stand-up pouches with a gusseted bottom so they stand on a shelf.
• Mylar bags, a common name for metallized film bags, which block light and help protect contents.
• Flat pouches for samples and single servings.
• Features such as zip closures, tear notches, hang holes, clear windows and degassing valves for coffee.

Paper bags

• Kraft shopping bags with twisted or flat paper handles.
• White paper bags for brighter color printing.
• Premium retail bags with rope or ribbon handles and laminated finishes.
• Bakery and takeout bags for food service.

When to choose which

Choose a pouch when the bag is the primary package and needs to protect the product from air, moisture or light. Choose a paper bag when the product already has its own packaging and the bag is for carrying and branding. Many brands use both.

Printing and finishes

Pouches can be printed in full color with matte, gloss or holographic effects, often with a mix of matte and shiny areas. Paper bags take one or more ink colors, foil stamping and lamination on premium styles.

Design tips

• Plan where the zipper, tear notch and window sit before placing artwork.
• Leave clear space for labels, lot codes or required product information.
• For cannabis and some food or supplement products, packaging rules vary by state and province; check current rules, including any child-resistant requirements.
