What Is Soft-touch lamination?
Updated · Vorex Packaging
Soft-touch lamination is a matte film applied to printed packaging that gives the surface a velvety, almost suede-like feel. It mutes glare, makes colors look rich and calm, and signals a premium product, so it is often chosen for cosmetics, electronics, jewelry and luxury rigid boxes.
Soft-touch, sometimes called velvet or silk-touch lamination, is a thin plastic film with a special textured matte surface. It is bonded over the printed sheet before the box is cut and folded.
Why brands choose it
- The tactile feel makes customers notice the box when they pick it up.
- It pairs well with spot UV, foil stamping and embossing for contrast.
- It protects print from scuffs better than an uncoated surface.
Things to consider
Soft-touch film can show fingerprints and marks on very dark colors, and it slightly darkens and softens printed colors, so check a proof or sample. Because it is a plastic film, it may affect how easily the box can be recycled in some programs. If recyclability is a priority, ask about coatings that give a matte look without a laminated film, and check local recycling rules before making claims on the box.
