Custom Sleeve Boxes

Updated

Custom sleeve boxes are packaging made of a printed outer sleeve that slides over a tray or existing box. Made to your exact size, they suit gift sets, apparel, chocolates, soaps and food brands that want a premium slide-out reveal, or an easy way to brand plain stock boxes and containers.

Custom Sleeve Boxes

What is a sleeve box?

A sleeve box has two parts: an inner tray that holds the product and an outer sleeve, open at both ends, that slides over it. The tray pulls out like a matchbox drawer. A sleeve can also be used alone, wrapped around a plain box, jar or food container to add branding without printing the whole package.

When to choose a sleeve box

  • You want a premium slide-out opening for gifts or special editions.
  • You sell soap, chocolate, tea, socks or other flat items.
  • You want to brand stock containers, such as food trays or plain boxes, with a printed wrap.
  • You run seasonal designs and want to change only the sleeve.

For a fully rigid presentation, consider a rigid drawer box, which uses the same slide-out idea with thicker board.

Materials and finishes

Sleeves and trays are usually made from SBS paperboard for bright print or kraft for a natural look. For heavier contents, the tray can be made from E-flute corrugated or rigid chipboard. Common finishes include:

  • Matte, gloss or soft-touch lamination on the sleeve
  • Foil stamping, embossing or spot UV
  • Window cutouts that show the product or tray
  • Thumb notches or ribbon pulls on the tray

Design tips

  • Print the tray in a contrasting color so the reveal feels intentional.
  • Keep the sleeve design focused; it is the only part seen on the shelf.
  • Allow a little clearance so the tray slides smoothly without falling out.
  • Use a thumb notch on the sleeve to make opening easy.

FAQ

Custom Sleeve Boxes: common questions

What is the difference between a sleeve box and a drawer box?
The idea is the same: a tray slides out of an outer sleeve. Sleeve box usually means a folding paperboard version that ships flat. A drawer box usually means a rigid version made from thick chipboard wrapped in printed paper, which feels heavier and more premium and ships already assembled.
Can I order just the sleeve?
Yes. Printed sleeves on their own are a common way to brand plain boxes, food containers, jars or bundles. Give us the outside dimensions of the item the sleeve will wrap around, and the sleeve will be made to fit it closely.
Are sleeve boxes good for food?
Sleeves are widely used on food packaging such as chocolate boxes, meal trays and bakery containers, often wrapped around a separate food-safe container. If the product will touch the board directly, check the food-contact requirements for your product and tell us when you request a quote.
How tight should a sleeve fit?
The sleeve should hold the tray or container securely while still sliding off easily. That is why we work from the exact outside dimensions of the tray or item. We build in a small clearance and show the measurements on the dieline for you to check.
Can the tray and sleeve be printed differently?
Yes. The tray and sleeve are separate pieces, so each can have its own color, print and finish. Many brands print a bold pattern or message on the tray so it surprises the customer when it slides out.
