Mailer Box vs Shipping Box: Which Do You Need?
Updated · Vorex Packaging
Choose a mailer box when the box itself is part of the customer experience: it folds into a tidy, self-locking box with a tuck-in lid and prints well. Choose a regular shipping box (a slotted carton taped shut) for heavier, larger or bulk shipments where protection and economy matter more than presentation.
| Mailer box | Shipping box | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | One-piece, self-locking with a tuck-in lid | Slotted carton with flaps closed by tape |
| Typical board | E-flute or B-flute corrugated | Single-wall or double-wall corrugated, often B or C-flute |
| Opening experience | Opens like a gift box, no tape needed on the lid | Customer cuts tape to open |
| Printing | Often printed outside and inside | Often plain or simply printed |
| Best for | Direct-to-consumer, subscriptions, PR kits | Heavy items, bulk orders, warehouse shipments |
| Storage | Ships flat, folds without glue | Ships flat, needs tape to close |
What is the difference?
Both are usually made from corrugated board and both ship flat, but they are built for different jobs. A mailer box, sometimes called a roll end tuck top box, has double-thickness side walls and a lid that tucks into the front. It looks finished on its own and does not need tape to stay closed, though many brands add a sticker or tape for security. A standard shipping box, the regular slotted carton, has four top and four bottom flaps that are folded and taped.
Protection
Shipping boxes can be made from heavier double-wall board and come in large sizes, so they handle weight and stacking well. Mailers are strong for light and medium products and protect well when the product fits snugly, but they are not usually chosen for very heavy goods.
Branding and unboxing
Mailers are designed to be seen. Printing inside the lid, a clean opening and a snug fit create the unboxing moment that customers share online. Shipping boxes are typically plain or printed with a simple logo, and they are often used as outer cartons.
Choose a mailer box if...
- You ship direct to customers and want the box to carry your brand.
- You sell subscriptions, gift sets or influencer kits.
- Your products are light to medium weight.
Choose a shipping box if...
- Your products are heavy, bulky or shipped in multiples.
- You ship to retailers or warehouses where presentation matters less.
- You need an outer carton to protect a retail or rigid box inside.
Many brands use both: a printed mailer for customer orders and plain shipping boxes for wholesale. Whichever you choose, Vorex makes it to your exact size.
