E-Flute vs B-Flute: Which Corrugated Board Do You Need?

Updated · Vorex Packaging

Choose E-flute for printed mailer and retail boxes holding light to medium products, because it is thin, folds neatly and prints sharply. Choose B-flute when the product is heavier or more fragile, or the box faces rougher handling, because its larger flutes give more cushioning, puncture resistance and stacking strength.

What the letters mean

Corrugated board is named by flute size. The flute is the wavy middle layer, and its height and spacing decide how thick and protective the board is. E-flute has small, tightly packed flutes. B-flute has larger flutes, so the board is roughly twice as thick.

Protection

B-flute's taller arches absorb more impact and resist puncture and crushing better, which helps with glass, dense items and boxes that are stacked. E-flute protects well for many e-commerce products, especially when the product fits snugly or sits in an insert.

Print and appearance

The thinner E-flute has a flatter surface, so logos, small text and full-color designs look crisp. On B-flute, heavy ink coverage can show faint lines from the flutes underneath. Printing a separate liner and laminating it to the board is one way to get high-quality graphics on thicker flutes.

Space and handling

E-flute boxes are lighter and take up less room flat, which helps storage. Their thinner walls also fold into neater corners, giving a more refined look when opened.

Choose E-flute if...

  • You need a printed mailer or retail box with a premium look.
  • Products are light to medium weight and fit snugly.
  • Storage space and box weight matter.

Choose B-flute if...

  • Products are heavy, fragile or oddly shaped.
  • Boxes are stacked or handled roughly in transit.
  • Protection matters more than fine print detail.

If you are unsure, share the product weight and how you ship, and a specialist can recommend a flute. Test a sample shipment before a large order.

Questions

Is B-flute twice as strong as E-flute?
Not exactly. B-flute is roughly twice as thick and generally offers more cushioning and crush resistance, but actual strength depends on the liners, the medium and the box design. Ask for a rating such as ECT.
Which flute do most subscription boxes use?
Many printed subscription and mailer boxes use E-flute because it prints well and folds neatly. Heavier subscription boxes, such as those with glass jars or books, may use B-flute for added protection.
Is there anything thinner than E-flute?
Yes. F-flute and other micro-flutes are thinner still and used for small retail boxes where a corrugated feel is wanted with a very slim profile. They offer less protection than E or B-flute.
