Mylar Bags vs Paper Bags: Which Packaging Fits Your Product?
Updated · Vorex Packaging
Choose Mylar bags when the product needs protection from moisture, oxygen and light, such as coffee, snacks, supplements or cannabis, and when you need heat sealing or child-resistant zippers. Choose paper bags for carrying purchases, gifts and dry goods, where a natural look and easy recycling matter more than a strong barrier.
| Mylar bags | Paper bags | |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Laminated polyester film, often with foil or metallized layer | Kraft or white paper |
| Barrier | High resistance to moisture, oxygen and light | Low barrier unless lined or coated |
| Closure | Heat seal, zipper, child-resistant options | Open top, fold, handles or sticker seal |
| Recyclability | Generally not accepted in curbside programs | Widely recyclable when unlined |
| Look | Glossy, matte or holographic, full color | Natural kraft or printed white |
| Best for | Food freshness, supplements, cannabis, samples | Shopping, gifts, takeout, bakery |
Two different jobs
Although both are called bags, they solve different problems. Mylar bags are pouches made from laminated films, usually polyester with a metallized or foil barrier and a sealant layer. They keep products fresh and protected. Paper bags are made from kraft or white paper and are mainly used to carry, present or wrap products.
Protection and freshness
Mylar bags block light and slow the passage of moisture and oxygen, which helps preserve coffee, snacks, dried foods and supplements. They can be heat sealed for tamper evidence and include resealable or child-resistant zippers. Paper bags let air and moisture through unless they have a liner or coating, so they are better for short-term carrying or for dry products already sealed in another layer.
Sustainability and claims
Plain paper bags are widely recyclable and many shoppers see them as a lower-impact choice. Multi-layer Mylar laminates are generally hard to recycle in curbside programs. If you print environmental claims on either, check current FTC Green Guides and Competition Bureau guidance and local recycling rules.
Branding
Both can be fully printed. Mylar offers glossy, matte and holographic finishes and clear windows. Paper bags suit natural, craft and retail brands, and they carry a logo well on the street.
