What Is Kraft?

Updated · Vorex Packaging

Kraft is a strong paper or board made from wood pulp using the kraft (sulfate) process, usually left unbleached so it keeps a natural brown color. In packaging, kraft describes brown paperboard, corrugated liners and paper bags valued for their strength, rustic look and their association with simpler, less processed materials.

The word kraft comes from the German for strength. The kraft pulping process keeps long, strong wood fibers, which is why kraft paper resists tearing. Unbleached kraft is brown, while bleached kraft is white.

Where kraft is used

  • Brown corrugated mailers and shipping boxes.
  • Kraft paperboard cartons for soap, candles, coffee and food.
  • Paper bags, tissue, labels and food wrapping paper.

Printing on kraft

Ink on brown kraft looks darker and less saturated than on white board, because the brown base shows through. Dark colors and one-color logos look strong, while light colors and photographs can appear muddy. White ink, or a white board with a kraft-style print, are options when you need bright colors. Ask for a digital proof and consider a printed sample to judge color.

Eco claims

Kraft is often recyclable, but the color alone does not make a box eco-friendly. If you plan to print environmental claims, make sure each claim is accurate and check current FTC and Competition Bureau guidance.

Questions

Is kraft paper recyclable?
Plain kraft paper and corrugated board are widely accepted in curbside recycling. Plastic laminations, heavy coatings or attached plastic windows can change that, so check local program rules before labeling a box as recyclable.
Can you print colors on kraft boxes?
Yes, but colors print darker because the brown board shows through the ink. Bold, dark designs work best. White ink underneath can help lighter colors stand out, and a proof helps you judge the result.
