Black Friday Packaging: A Small Business Plan for 2026
Updated · Vorex Packaging
Black Friday packaging for a small business means a branded mailer or shipping box sized for your deal bundles, an insert to keep products still, and a light seasonal layer such as a sticker, sleeve or tissue. Black Friday 2026 falls on November 27, so confirm sizes and artwork in October and have packaging in hand before Thanksgiving week.
When is Black Friday 2026?
Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving in the United States. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management lists Thanksgiving Day 2026 as Thursday, November 26 (OPM federal holidays), which puts Black Friday on Friday, November 27 and Cyber Monday on Monday, November 30. For most small online sellers, the five days from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday are one long sales event, and the orders from it keep shipping well into December.
If you also sell in Canada, note that Canadian Thanksgiving is much earlier: the Canada Revenue Agency lists it as Monday, October 12, 2026 (CRA public holidays). Many Canadian shoppers still take part in Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales in late November, so plan one packaging run that covers both countries.
What packaging do Black Friday orders need?
Black Friday packaging has two jobs that pull in different directions. It has to protect products through the busiest shipping weeks of the year, and it has to make a first impression on customers who may be buying from you for the first time because of a deal. Most small brands cover both with a short list of items:
- A branded outer box or mailer. Custom mailer boxes open like a gift and give you an inside surface to print. For heavier or stacked items, custom shipping boxes in corrugated board are the safer choice. If you are unsure which fits, our comparison of a mailer box vs shipping box walks through the trade-offs.
- A lighter option for soft goods. Apparel and textiles often ship well in custom poly mailers, which keep parcel weight down.
- Something that holds the product still. An insert or simple divider stops bundles and glass items moving in transit.
- One or two brand touches. Custom tissue paper, a custom sticker to seal it, or a printed card.
You do not need all of these. Pick the outer packaging first, because it sets the sizes for everything else, then add only the touches you can pack quickly on your busiest day.
Should Black Friday packaging be seasonal or all-year?
This is the biggest decision, and it changes how much risk you carry. A box that says Black Friday or shows a Christmas scene is only useful for a few weeks. Any boxes left over in January become stock you cannot use until next year, if at all.
Many small brands get a better result from an all-year box plus a seasonal layer. The box carries your logo and colors and works in any month. The seasonal part comes from items that are cheaper to swap: a printed belly band, a holiday sticker, colored tissue or a card that says thank you for your holiday order. When the season ends, you stop adding the seasonal layer and keep using the boxes.
A full holiday design makes sense when the box itself is part of the gift, for example a bundle sold as a ready-made present, or when you know from past years roughly how many holiday orders you will ship. Our holiday mailer boxes and Christmas shipping boxes are built for that case.
How do you size packaging for Black Friday bundles?
Black Friday deals often come as bundles: two products for the price of one, a gift set, or a free item above an order value. Bundles change your box sizes, and that is where small brands get caught out. A box made for a single candle will not hold two plus a gift card.
List your planned offers, then group them by the space they need. In most cases three sizes cover a small catalog: one for single items, one for bundles and one for larger orders. Measure each group with any tissue and insert included, using the inside dimensions. Our guide on how to measure a box explains length, width and depth so the numbers you send match the box you get. A box that fits closely also needs less filler, which saves packing time when orders pile up.
How early should you order holiday packaging?
Earlier than feels necessary. Custom packaging goes through several steps before it reaches you: confirming sizes, preparing artwork, approving a proof, printing, finishing and freight. Each step can take longer in autumn, when many brands are ordering for the same holiday window.
Work backward from the day you need packaging in hand, not the day the sale starts. You will want time to pack and pre-fold boxes before Thanksgiving week, time for a correction if the proof needs one, and a margin for freight. Your quote confirms the timing for your specific order, so ask for it as soon as you know your products and rough quantities. Artwork is the step that most often slips, so our guide to preparing artwork for custom boxes is worth reading before you start.
What are the 2026 holiday shipping deadlines?
Your packaging plan also has to fit the carriers' calendar, because many Black Friday orders are gifts that must arrive before December 25. On September 22, 2026, the U.S. Postal Service published its recommended send-by dates for delivery by December 25 within the contiguous United States (USPS 2026 holiday mailing and shipping dates):
- USPS Ground Advantage: December 17
- First-Class Mail: December 17
- Priority Mail: December 18
- Priority Mail Express: December 19
USPS lists separate dates for Alaska, Hawaii, military and international addresses, so check the release if you ship there. For Canadian customers, Canada Post publishes its own holiday send-by dates by service and zone on its holiday sending page. If you use another carrier, check its holiday schedule directly. Put your own last order date for guaranteed holiday delivery on your site a few days before the carrier's date, so you have time to pick and pack.
How do you keep packing fast on your busiest days?
The best packaging design fails if it takes too long to pack. Before the rush, time yourself packing ten orders the way you plan to do it. If one step is slow, such as folding a complex insert or tying ribbon, simplify it or prepare it in advance.
- Pre-fold and stack mailers and inserts during quieter days in early November.
- Keep the brand touches simple: one tissue fold and one sticker is quicker than a layered wrap.
- Print the message instead of writing it. A printed card or a message inside the lid replaces handwritten notes.
- Order a little extra of your most used size, since late orders and replacements always come.
A considered opening sequence still matters for new customers. Our article on the unboxing experience for small brands shows how to keep it memorable without slowing packing, and if you sell through online marketplaces, the guide to packaging for Etsy and Shopify sellers covers the practical side.
