What Is Insert?
Updated · Vorex Packaging
An insert is a piece placed inside a box to hold, separate or protect products, such as a die-cut cardboard holder, foam tray, molded pulp cradle or divider. Inserts keep items from shifting in transit, present products neatly when the box is opened, and let several items share one box in an organized way.
Inserts are made to fit both the product and the inside of the box. They range from simple folded paperboard to precision-cut foam and molded fiber.
Common insert materials
- Paperboard or corrugated: die-cut slots and platforms; widely recyclable.
- Foam: cushioned cavities for fragile or high-value items.
- Molded pulp: fiber-based trays that cradle products.
- Fabric or covered board: premium presentation in rigid boxes.
When you need one
Use an insert if your product is fragile, has an irregular shape, or comes in a set such as bottles, jars or a kit. Inserts also matter for the unboxing experience, where products should sit in a clear order. Provide the exact dimensions of each item, and mention how the box will ship. A physical sample is the best way to check the fit before ordering in volume.
