What Is Tuck end box?

Updated · Vorex Packaging

A tuck end box is a folding paperboard carton that closes with flaps tucked into the box at the top, the bottom or both ends. It ships flat, folds up by hand without glue on the filling line, and is the most common retail carton for cosmetics, supplements, candles and other small, light products.

A tuck end box is cut from a single sheet of paperboard, glued along one side seam, and delivered flat. The buyer folds it open and closes each end by pushing a tuck flap inside the box, with small dust flaps folded underneath to keep the end square.

Main variations

  • Reverse tuck end (RTE): the top and bottom flaps tuck in from opposite sides.
  • Straight tuck end (STE): both flaps tuck in from the same side, so the front panel stays clean.
  • Tuck top with auto-lock bottom: a pre-glued bottom snaps into place for heavier items.

When it matters for buyers

Tuck end boxes suit products that are light, sit on a shelf and do not need to survive the mail on their own. If a product is heavy or ships directly to customers, consider an auto-lock bottom or a corrugated mailer instead. Because the flaps can be reopened, tuck ends work well where customers take the product out and put it back, such as skincare or tea.

Questions

What is the difference between a tuck end box and a mailer box?
A tuck end box is usually made from thin paperboard for retail shelves, while a mailer box is made from corrugated board with thicker walls so it can travel through the mail. Many brands use a tuck end carton inside a mailer when they ship.
Can a tuck end box hold heavy products?
Tuck flaps can open under weight, so heavy items are better in a box with an auto-lock or crash-lock bottom, or in a corrugated box. The right board thickness also depends on the product's weight and size.
