Pillow Box vs Gable Box: Which Small Carry Box Fits Best?

Updated · Vorex Packaging

Choose a pillow box for small, flat or lightweight items such as jewelry, gift cards, soap and favors, where a compact, elegant shape matters. Choose a gable box when the product is bulkier or needs to be carried by hand, such as baked goods, takeout or gift kits, because it has a built-in handle and more space.

Shape and function

A pillow box is a slim box with curved ends that fold inward, creating a soft, pillow-like outline. It is compact and elegant, making it a favorite for small gifts and retail add-ons. A gable box has a rectangular base and two top panels that rise to a peak with a handle cut-out, like the roof of a house.

Capacity and protection

Pillow boxes hold thin or small products and give limited protection, so they are best for light items that are not easily crushed. Gable boxes are taller and roomier, and with an auto-lock base they carry heavier contents such as pastries or a set of products.

Customer experience

A pillow box feels like a wrapped gift and often goes inside a shopping bag or mailer. A gable box is designed to be carried as is, so it works as its own bag at events, bakeries and pop-up stores.

Materials and printing

Both styles come in kraft for a natural look, white paperboard for full color, and can take foil, windows and finishes. Pillow boxes can also be made from clear PET to show the product.

Choose a pillow box if...

  • Your product is small, light and fairly flat.
  • You want a compact gift or favor presentation.
  • You need packaging for samples, cards or accessories.

Choose a gable box if...

  • Customers need to carry the box by hand.
  • Your product is bulkier, such as baked goods or a kit.
  • You want a friendly, recognizable carry-out style.

Neither style is designed to be mailed alone. Place them inside a mailer or shipping box for delivery.

Questions

Can gable boxes be used for food?
Yes, gable boxes are widely used for bakery items and takeout. For food that touches the board directly, ask your supplier about food-safe board, coatings or liners, and check current food packaging rules for your product.
Do pillow boxes need glue?
The box blank is glued along its side seam during manufacturing, but you do not need glue to close it. You simply press the curved ends inward along their score lines and they fold shut.
Which is better for wedding or party favors?
Both are popular. Pillow boxes suit small favors like candy, jewelry or cards, while gable boxes suit larger treats or small gift sets that guests carry home. Choose by the size of the favor.
