How to Package Pies for Thanksgiving Orders and Pickup
Updated · Vorex Packaging
To package pies for Thanksgiving, measure each pie across its widest point including the crimped rim and at its tallest point, then pick a square paperboard pie box a little larger on every side, with a window lid that never touches the filling. Keep the pie in its tin or tray on a greaseproof liner, add an insert if it can slide, and label the flavour, order name and allergens on a sticker. Keep pumpkin, custard and cream pies cold until pickup, and order boxes so they arrive before your first pre-order pickup day; U.S. Thanksgiving is Thursday 26 November 2026.
What a pie box has to do at Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is the busiest pie week of the year for most bakeries, farm stands and home bakers who sell under a cottage food license. Dozens or hundreds of whole pies leave the shop in a few days, most of them carried by hand, set on a car seat and opened at someone else's table. A good pie box keeps the crust whole and the filling level on that trip, keeps a soft pumpkin top from touching the lid, and makes the pie look like a gift when it lands on the table. Three choices decide all of that: the box size, the box style, and how the box is handed over. This guide takes them in order. If you already know you want a printed seasonal box, the custom Thanksgiving pie boxes page shows the options in one place.
Measure the pie, then size the box
Size the box from the pie as it leaves your oven, not from the pan's label. Measure across the widest point including the crimped rim, and measure the height from the bottom of the tin to the highest point of the filling or topping.
- Inside length and width: the widest measurement plus a little room so the tin lifts out without tipping. A tight box drags on the crimp; a loose one lets the pie slide into a corner.
- Inside height: the tallest point plus a gap above it. Meringue, whipped topping, a lattice top or a crumble needs more than a flat pumpkin pie.
- Deep-dish pies need a taller box than standard pies of the same width; do not try to share one size across both.
- Slices and hand pies go in their own smaller boxes. A whole-pie box with one slice in it lets the slice fall over.
A square box is the norm for round pies because it folds flat, stacks evenly in a car and leaves corners for lifting the tin out. Our ready-made Thanksgiving pie box pack, for example, is 10 x 10 x 2.5 inches inside. If you sell several sizes, measure each one and list them in your quote request: the box is made to the size you send.
Pick a box style for how the pie is sold
Start with how the customer gets the pie, because a box picked up at a counter and a box stacked in a delivery van need different builds.
| How it is sold | Box style | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-ordered pies picked up at the counter | Pie box with a lock-corner base and window lid | Folds fast in a rush, the window shows the right pie at pickup |
| Several pies or a pie with sides | Thanksgiving bakery box, deeper build | Room for rolls, a pie and cookies in one order |
| Farm stands and markets | Bakery box in kraft board | Natural look, takes a printed sticker or stamp |
| Pie slices and hand pies | Pastry box or a small window box | Each piece sits upright without sliding |
| Carry-out where hands are full | Handle box | One hand for the pie, one for the door |
| Client and team gifts | Thanksgiving gift box | A finished gift look for a pie, preserves or treats |
A window lid is the one feature most pie sellers ask about. At pickup it lets staff check the flavour without opening the box, and on the table it shows the crust. Choose a box tall enough that the window film never touches the filling or a whipped topping.
Board, print and what goes inside
Most pie boxes are made from folding paperboard. SBS white board gives the cleanest print and the brightest colours; kraft board gives a natural, farm-stand look. Pies are buttery, so plan for grease:
- Line the base. A sheet of greaseproof paper or a paper doily under the tin keeps butter marks off the board, especially on white boxes.
- Keep the pie in its tin or tray. A foil pan or a paper tray gives the customer something firm to lift.
- Add an insert if the pie slides. A simple card insert or ring holds the tin in the middle of the box so it cannot slam into a wall on a turn.
- Print the outside, label the inside. Your brand and the season go on the box; the flavour, date and ingredients go on a label or sticker, so one printed box works for every flavour.
Pickup day: keep the line moving
Thanksgiving pickup is usually one or two very busy days, so the box should help the line move.
- Fold boxes ahead. Lock-corner and auto-lock bases stand up in seconds; fold a day's worth before you open.
- Label every box with the order name and flavour on the same side, so staff can read the stack.
- Stack by pickup time, not by flavour. A square box stacks better than a round one; keep stacks short so the bottom lid does not dent.
- Hand the pie over flat. A short line on the label or lid, "keep flat, keep cool", helps more pies arrive whole.
Pumpkin, custard and cream pies are made with eggs and milk and need to stay cold until they are eaten, so keep them chilled until pickup and tell customers to refrigerate them at home. If you sell under a cottage food law, check your state's rules for which pies you may sell and what the label must say; rules differ by state. Packaged foods sold in the U.S. must declare the major food allergens (the FDA lists nine), and pies often contain several: wheat, milk, eggs and tree nuts in pecan pie.
Can you ship pies?
Some pies travel better than others. Firm fruit pies and pecan pies hold their shape; custard, pumpkin and cream pies need cold handling the whole way, which makes ordinary parcel shipping a poor fit. If you do ship, put the pie box inside a corrugated mailer box with fill on every side, keep the pie flat, and ship early in the week so parcels do not sit in a depot over a weekend. For most bakeries, local pickup and delivery remain the safer choice for Thanksgiving week.
When to order Thanksgiving pie boxes
U.S. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday 26 November 2026, and pre-orders usually open weeks before. Work back from your first big pickup day, not from the holiday itself: allow time to measure your pies, approve a digital proof, about 7 business days of production after approval, and shipping. If your boxes also need to cover Black Friday and Small Business Saturday (28 November 2026) sales, order one run for both. Your quote confirms production and delivery dates before you approve anything.
Design ideas for Thanksgiving pie boxes
- Autumn leaves in rust, gold and deep orange on white board, wrapping around the corners.
- Kraft board with a single-colour print of your logo and a wheat or leaf motif, for a farm-stand look.
- A plain seasonal phrase such as "Baked for your table" that works for Thanksgiving and the rest of the holiday season, so leftover boxes still sell in December.
- A window shaped like a leaf or circle that frames the crust.
- A flavour panel left blank on the lid for a sticker, so one box covers apple, pecan and pumpkin.
If you design the box yourself, the free dieline generator draws a flat template for common box styles, and our dieline guide explains where the artwork goes. For gifts beyond pies, see Thanksgiving gift box ideas.
Ready-made packs or a custom run?
If a standard size fits your pies, our standard packs include printed Thanksgiving pie boxes and Thanksgiving bakery boxes in set quantities, with the price shown on each pack page. For a deep-dish height, a custom window or several sizes in one design, a custom run makes the box to your measurements. Browse the wider bakery packaging range or the Thanksgiving packaging collection, then send your sizes and quantity: a packaging specialist replies with options and pricing, and you approve a digital proof before anything is printed.
