What Is Window patching?
Updated · Vorex Packaging
Window patching is the process of gluing a clear plastic or film panel behind a die-cut opening in a box, so customers can see the product while it stays protected from dust and handling. It is common on bakery, toy, cosmetic, candle and food boxes where showing the product helps it sell.
First the window shape is die cut from the box blank. A window patching machine then applies a piece of clear film over the opening on the inside of the box, before the box is folded and glued.
Why use a window
- Shoppers can see the color, size or freshness of the product.
- It reduces the need to open boxes on the shelf.
- It frames the product as part of the design.
Things to consider
Window film is usually a clear plastic such as PET, though plant-based films are also available. A plastic window can affect recyclability, since some programs ask consumers to remove it, so check local rules before printing recycling claims. Keep windows away from folds and edges so the box stays strong, and leave enough board around the opening. For food that touches the film, ask your supplier about suitable food-contact materials. A window without film is another option when protection is less important.
