What Is Proof?

Updated · Vorex Packaging

A proof is the final preview of your packaging artwork that you review and approve before printing begins. A digital proof shows the design placed on the dieline with cut, fold and bleed lines, while a physical or press proof is a printed sample. Approving the proof confirms the order goes into production as shown.

The proof is the last checkpoint between design and production. Once approved, the printer makes plates or files, cuts dies and prints exactly what the proof shows, so mistakes caught at this stage avoid costly reprints.

Types of proofs

  • Digital (PDF) proof: the artwork on the dieline, used to check layout, text and finishes.
  • Physical sample: a printed or plain box to check fit, structure and feel.
  • Press proof: a print from the production press, used when color must be exact.

What to check

  • Spelling, ingredients, barcodes, legal text and contact details.
  • Panel orientation and that nothing important sits on a fold or cut line.
  • Finish areas such as foil, spot UV and embossing.
  • Box dimensions and material.

Remember that screen colors differ from print. Vorex sends a digital proof before production, so you can check everything before approving.

Questions

What happens after I approve a proof?
The order moves into production using the approved files. Changes after approval may require new plates, dies or a reprint, so it is worth checking text, layout and dimensions carefully and asking questions before you sign off.
Does a digital proof show exact print colors?
No. Screens display color differently from ink on board, so a digital proof is reliable for layout and content but only approximate for color. When exact color matters, ask about a printed sample or press proof.
