What Is Aqueous coating?

Updated · Vorex Packaging

Aqueous coating is a clear, water-based coating applied over printed packaging to protect the ink from scuffs, fingerprints and moisture. It dries quickly, comes in gloss, matte and satin finishes, and is a common, economical way to protect folding cartons without adding a plastic laminate film.

Aqueous coating is usually applied in-line on an offset press, right after the inks, and dries with heat and air. It forms a thin protective layer over the whole sheet or selected areas.

Benefits

  • Protects printed colors from rubbing during packing and shipping.
  • Available in gloss, satin and matte looks.
  • Dries fast, which keeps production moving.
  • Generally considered easier for paper recycling than plastic film laminates.

Compared with other finishes

Aqueous coating gives less protection and a less dramatic look than lamination, which is a bonded film. It is smoother and more even than traditional oil-based varnish. UV coating is harder and glossier but needs UV curing. For many everyday retail cartons, aqueous coating is enough. If your box will face heavy handling or needs a premium feel, ask about matte or soft-touch lamination, or spot UV on top.

Questions

Is aqueous coating waterproof?
It adds some resistance to moisture and fingerprints, but it does not make paperboard waterproof. Packaging that will face wet or cold conditions may need a different board, a laminate or a special barrier coating.
What is the difference between aqueous coating and varnish?
Aqueous coating is water based and dries quickly, while traditional varnish is oil based and applied like an ink. Both protect print, but aqueous coating usually gives a more even finish and fewer drying issues.
