What is a hexagon box?

A hexagon box has six equal side panels, so it looks like a honeycomb cell from above. It can be built as a folding carton that ships flat and closes with tuck flaps, or as a rigid two-piece box with a lid that lifts off. The six panels give you more surfaces to print on than a standard box, which suits patterns and storytelling.

When to choose a hexagon box

Hexagon boxes work when you want a product to look like a gift: candles, chocolates, macarons, tea, bath products, jewelry and holiday sets. They also tile neatly side by side, which makes for eye-catching shelf displays and gift baskets. Because the shape is less common than a rectangle, it helps a product stand apart.

Materials and finishes

Folding hexagon cartons are usually SBS paperboard, a bleached board with a smooth surface for bright print, or kraft board for a natural, unbleached look. Rigid hexagon boxes use thick chipboard wrapped in printed or textured paper, which gives a solid, premium feel. Foil stamping, embossing, spot UV and soft-touch lamination all work well on the lid.

Design tips

• Use the lid: it is the panel people see first in a gift setting.
• Match patterns at the seams: repeating designs need careful alignment across six panels.
• Plan an insert: round items such as candles can move in a hexagon, so consider a fitted insert.
• Keep text off edges: fold lines on six sides leave less flat space per panel.
