What is a hanger box?

A hanger box is a retail carton with an extended panel at the top that carries a punched hole. The most common hole shapes are a round hole and a so-called sombrero or euro slot, which looks like a wide hat and fits standard peg hooks. The tab can be part of the box itself or a separate header glued on. The rest of the box is often a tuck end carton, sometimes with a window.

When to choose a hanger box

Choose a hanger box if your product will be sold from a peg wall, slatwall or display rack: phone cases, chargers, cables, earbuds, small toys, hair accessories, cosmetics, hardware, fishing tackle and socks. Hanging products save shelf space for the store and put the front panel at eye level, which is why many retailers ask for peg-ready packaging.

Materials and finishes

Most hanger boxes use SBS paperboard, a bleached board with a smooth, white printing surface for crisp product photos and text. Kraft board, which is unbleached, suits natural brands. Heavier products need a stronger tab, which can be made with a double layer of board. Gloss lamination and spot UV help the box stand out under store lighting.

• Ask your retailer: some stores specify the hole type and position.
• Keep the front simple: shoppers scan peg walls quickly.
• Add a window if it helps: seeing the product builds trust.
• Put the barcode on the back or side: where store staff expect it.
