Custom Flip-Top Boxes

Updated

Custom flip-top boxes are printed boxes with a lid attached along one edge, so it flips open and closed without coming off. They suit cosmetics, playing cards, cigars, accessories, jewelry, chocolates and gift sets that customers open often. Vorex makes them to your exact size for brands in the USA and Canada.

Custom Flip-Top Boxes

What is a flip-top box?

A flip-top box has a lid joined to the body along one back edge, which acts as a hinge. The lid swings up to open and closes over the front, often with a tuck flap, a friction fit or a magnet holding it shut. Because the lid stays attached, the box works for products that are used over time and put back.

When to choose a flip-top box

Flip-top boxes suit cosmetics palettes, lipsticks, playing cards, business cards, cigars, chocolates, tea, small electronics accessories and jewelry. They protect the contents between uses and keep the brand in front of the customer every time the box opens. A rigid flip-top with a magnet feels premium and is often kept long after the product is gone.

Materials and finishes

  • SBS paperboard: a smooth bleached board for printed folding flip-top cartons.
  • Kraft: unbleached board for a natural look.
  • Rigid chipboard: thick board wrapped in printed or textured paper for premium hinged boxes.

Soft-touch or matte lamination, foil stamping, embossing and spot UV suit the lid, which is the panel customers see and touch most.

Design tips

  • Design the open view: the inside of the lid is visible every time the box opens.
  • Choose a closure: tuck flaps keep costs simple; magnets give a firmer close.
  • Plan an insert: cosmetics and jewelry usually sit in a fitted tray.
  • Avoid text on the hinge: it creases with use.

FAQ

Custom Flip-Top Boxes: common questions

What is the difference between a flip-top box and a two-piece box?
A flip-top box has a lid attached along one edge, so it hinges open and stays connected. A two-piece box has a separate lid that lifts off the base. Flip-tops suit products used repeatedly; two-piece boxes suit gifts and presentation where lifting the lid is part of the moment.
Can a flip-top box have a magnetic closure?
Yes. Rigid flip-top boxes often have small magnets hidden under the paper wrap of the lid and front panel, which hold the box shut with a soft click. Folding paperboard flip-tops usually close with a tuck flap instead. We can quote both.
What products use flip-top boxes?
Common uses include cosmetics palettes, lipsticks, playing cards, business cards, cigars, chocolates, tea, jewelry and phone or watch accessories. Any product that customers open, use and put back is a good fit, because the lid stays attached.
Can you print inside the lid?
Yes. The inside of the lid is seen every time the box opens, so many brands add a pattern, a thank-you message or usage instructions there. Include inside artwork when you request a quote and it will appear on your digital proof before print.
How do I get a quote for flip-top boxes?
Send the product size, quantity, material, closure type, any insert and your artwork through our quote form. We reply with pricing and options, help set the artwork on the dieline and send a digital proof before print so you can check the open and closed views.
