Pizza Box Sizes: How to Pick the Right Box for Each Pizza
Updated · Vorex Packaging
Pizza boxes are square and sized by the pizza they hold. The common sizes are 10 inch for small, 12 inch for medium, 14 inch for large, 16 inch for extra-large and 18 inch for party pizzas. Most are about 1.5 to 2 inches deep; deep-dish and stuffed-crust pizzas need a deeper box. Always confirm against your own pizza sizes before ordering.
Step by step
Measure your pizzas
Measure the widest point of each size after baking, including the crust edge, and the tallest point with toppings.
Pick the box width
Choose the box whose inside width matches the pizza or is slightly larger, so the pie lies flat without sliding far.
Pick the depth
Use a standard depth for thin and hand-tossed pizzas and a deeper box for deep-dish, stuffed crust or heavy toppings so the lid clears the cheese.
Choose the board
Ask for corrugated board. Thinner flutes print more sharply and store flatter; thicker flutes insulate and stack better for large pies.
Add vents and a liner if needed
Steam vents help keep the crust from going soft. A food-safe liner or grease-resistant sheet protects the board.
Test a delivery run
Box real pizzas, stack them as drivers do and check heat, sogginess and lid strength after a typical trip.
Common pizza box sizes
| Box size | Typical pizza |
|---|---|
| 10 x 10 in | Small or personal |
| 12 x 12 in | Medium |
| 14 x 14 in | Large |
| 16 x 16 in | Extra-large |
| 18 x 18 in | Party size |
These are the sizes most suppliers list, checked against published supplier listings on 12 October 2026. Pizzerias name their sizes differently, so go by the measured diameter of your own pies, not by the words small, medium and large. Smaller boxes for personal pizzas and slices, and larger ones for sheet or party pizzas, are also made.
Depth
Most pizza boxes are about 1.5 to 2 inches deep, which suits thin-crust and hand-tossed pizzas. Deep-dish, stuffed-crust and heavily topped pizzas need more headroom, commonly 2.5 to 3 inches, so the lid does not touch the cheese.
Board and construction
Pizza boxes are made from corrugated board because the fluted layer holds heat and keeps the lid from sagging. Thinner board such as E-flute gives a flatter surface for printed artwork and takes less space in storage. Thicker board such as B-flute insulates better and stacks more safely under large, heavy pizzas. Most boxes fold from one die-cut sheet with locking corner tabs, so they ship and store flat.
Details that matter in delivery
- Vents: small holes let steam out so the crust stays crisp.
- Grease resistance: a liner or coated inner surface stops oil soaking through.
- Lid support: a pizza saver or a stronger board keeps the lid off the toppings when boxes are stacked.
- Print: the lid is the largest branded surface most pizzerias have; one or two colors on kraft or white is common.
Slices and sides
Single slices travel in triangular slice boxes or clamshells, and sides such as wings and garlic bread need their own food boxes sized to the portion.
