What Is Offset vs digital printing?

Updated · Vorex Packaging

Offset vs digital printing is the choice between two main ways of printing packaging. Offset printing transfers ink from metal plates through a rubber blanket onto board and suits larger runs and exact spot colors. Digital printing applies ink or toner directly from a file with no plates, which suits short runs, samples and variable designs.

Both methods can produce sharp, full-color packaging, but they differ in setup and economics.

Offset printing

  • Needs printing plates, so setup takes longer.
  • Cost per box usually falls as quantity rises, which favors larger runs.
  • Prints Pantone spot colors with mixed inks for consistent brand colors.

Digital printing

  • No plates, so setup is faster and short runs are practical.
  • Easy to print several designs or personalized versions in one order.
  • Colors are built from process inks, so some spot colors are approximated.

How to choose

If you are launching, testing designs or ordering smaller quantities, digital is often the practical route. For established products in higher volume, or when exact brand color matching is important, offset is usually preferred. Ask your supplier to quote your order both ways when quantities are near the point where either method could work.

Questions

Is digital printing lower quality than offset?
Not necessarily. Modern digital presses produce sharp, vivid results. Offset still tends to have the edge in exact spot color matching and consistency over long runs, while digital excels at short runs and variable designs.
Which printing method is cheaper for custom boxes?
It depends mainly on quantity. Digital avoids plate costs, which helps smaller orders, while offset becomes more economical per unit as runs grow. A specialist can compare both for your quantity and design.
